My Thoughts on 'Sit Kneel Stand'
By Troy Ogilvie
The new work currently has a few highly improvised sections. However, these improvised sections are not as free form as it may sound. With Andrea’s guidance, the company members have put in many hours honing a specific language with an evolving vocabulary. This way, without words, we are able to communicate to one another clearly and effectively. Even so, as with...
A Dancer’s Perspective
An interview with Arika Yamada of Gallim Dance by: Madeline Wilcox
“I think were all trying to find our place in this world. Whatever we find or whatever we do, we do it as if it is the most important thing for you. Each person has a role”
[M] What do you discover about your dancing when creating a new work?
[A] For this process, I am faced with my strengths and...
Virginia Beach Tour!
Gallim Dance always looks forward to going on tour— who doesn’t like getting away from the city grind for a few days? Even if we spend more time in the theater than doing any sight-seeing, it is always wonderful to meet new people everywhere we go. Last week was no exception as the company headed south to Virginia Beach, VA, to perform Mama Call and Pupil Suite at the beautiful Sandler...
Our new home in Brooklyn!
Gallim Dance has recently completed its move into a new home at the Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. This step is the realization of a dream for our young company— to have a consistent and welcoming space of our own will revolutionize the way we live and create work every day. When in New York, the company spends six days a week rehearsing in the studio, so...

Please join Gallim Dance in an intimate performance that concludes the company’s residency at The JCC in Manhattan with two works by choreographer Andrea Miller. ‘Mama Call’ is a collection of dances that address Miller’s Sephardic story and examine how those who have been...
Health and Wellness
By Troy Ogilvie
I consider myself to be a pretty conscientious person when it comes to my health. Combined with a generally robust immune system and a sturdy skeleto muscular structure, I’ve steered clear of most major health issues. However, what happens when something is wrong and only other artists know what you’re talking about? It seems that when I go to a western doctor with...
Encountering Time
By Caroline Fermin
OK, let’s start with an image: me in my living room, staring at my computer/the orange curtains by the window, the light growing brighter, the day wearing on. Now another image: me in my living room, staring at my computer/the orange curtains by the window, the light fading away, night coming fast. And I ask myself, “Where has the day gone?” You see me now a little disturbed–I...

Troy Ogilvie: The Awakening by Kate Chopin
Recommended to her by Caroline Fermin, Troy recommends The Awakening to you! The book is regarded as one of the most influential pieces of feminist literature, published before that genre of writing even existed. Andrea: Spatial Interventions
Artists Alan and Michael Fleming: “Alternative sports like skateboarding and le parkour treat the city as a playground. As artists, we are interested in this re-appropriation of space through bodily movement. In a similarly playful yet subversive way, we climb, traverse, and meld into architecture. Our work investigates a phenomenological relationship to the...

Saving Arts Organizations: Support Gallim Dance
The mission of Gallim Dance is to create, to play inside the imagination, to find juxtapositions of the mind and body that resonate in the soul, to investigate our limitations and pleasures, and to realize the endless human capacity for inspiration.

Troy: Margaret Atwood’s Surfacing Coming highly recommended from a Gallim dancer, this is what the publisher had to say about the 1972 release: “Surfacing is a work permeated with an aura of suspense, complex with layered meanings, and written in brilliant, diamond-sharp prose. Here is a rich mine of ideas from an extraordinary writer about contemporary life and nature, families and...

Dan: Surviving the City on a Budget
There are some great places in Williamsburg that I love and are perfect to shop on a budget. Buffalo Exchange and Beacons Closet are second hand stores that have huge selections of barely used and brand new clothes that are amazing and extremely affordable. ASTEP Interview with Caroline Fermin
Chelsea: How long have you been involved with ASTEP?
Caroline: I began working with ASTEP before it was ASTEP. I joined ArtReach, a social activist club at Juilliard when it was run by Mauricio Salgado, a drama student. We would all get together and talk about arts and education, volunteer at soup kitchens, and hold fundraisers for various charities and shelters. It was, and still is, a...

Afterglow
As the dancers’ feet begin to heal and their skin is at last paint-free, we can look ahead to life post the epic weekends at Joyce SoHo. There’s a lot to be done. Post-production evaluations, infrastructure surgery, creative rest, and dancer dinners in an attempt to fight Gallim withdrawl.
I think that’s one of the beauties of being involved with a young company. People can...

We are also breathing new life into “I Can See Myself in Your Pupil,” which was premiered at Joyce SoHo last April and then smooshed...
